DOMINO-PLAYING

Dominoes may be introduced as a game popular with people of all ages in Britain (particularly with children, but also in certain situations of adult recreation such as pubs, working men’s clubs, and Women’s Institute socials). The game is thought to have made its way into Britain from France or Italy in the eighteenth century (the earliest mention in the OED is dated 1801) via returning prisoners of war—perhaps since it was a game they had found easy to play with others who did not (otherwise) share a common language.

The game is played usually by two or four people at a time (the foursome possibly representing two teams of two) with 28 rectangular counters (made from wood, bone or ivory). The counters are blank on one side and divided into two parts on the other, each part inscribed with a variable number of spots from zero to six. Thus the 28 dominoes have the following combinations of spots:
